2014-Novatec-R3-Disc-brake-road-bike-wheels01

Novatec’s road and cyclocross wheel line up gets three new disc brake options, from an all-carbon rim to alloy and tubeless ready.

The R3 Disc borrows the Hypertoroidal aero shape from their existing models and creates a disc specific clincher wheelset. The rim shape is the same as the standard R3, but the sidewalls lose the Matrisilk structural mesh they embed into the braketrack on the regular models. They’re handbuilt with stainless aero spokes and alloy nipples with 2-cross lacing.

The rims are 38mm deep and the wheelset comes in at a claimed 1559g. There’s also a deeper R5 with 50mm deep rims, and that gets the disc brake option, too…

The R3’s rim is 21mm wide (14.6 internal) and 38mm deep. The R5 is 24mm wide (18mm inside) and 50mm deep. Both use a 3-in-1 rear hub that’ll work with SRAM/Shimano 11-speed and Campagnolo 11-speed. At the moment, only the clinchers are being offered with disc brake hubs, but tubulars are available for rim brake setups.

If you want to go tubeless, you’ve got disc brake options for both road and cyclocross. The Jetfly is a 32mm deep alloy rim that claim to be as rigid as carbon rims but at a much friendlier price point and without adding much weight. Claimed weight is 1665g/pair, and they’re tubeless ready. Rim profile shown below.

The CXD’s were spied earlier this year as OEM spec on the 2014 Redline Conquest Pro ‘cross bike. They have a disc specific rim and an oversized rear hub axle. Claimed weight is just 1465g for the tubular and 1425g for the clincher. All weights are without skewers and rim tape.

The Jetfly’s rims are 21.5mm wide (17mm inside) and 32mm deep. The CXD’s are 21.3mm wide (17mm inside) and 23.4mm deep for the clinchers. The tubulars are 23.5mm wide and 24mm deep. Both have a nice, round profile at the spoke bed.

The alloy rim models also have full 11-speed compatibility for all brands of cassettes.
