lightweight urgestalt seite road bike frameset

The new Lightweight Urgestalt road bike frame has just been unveiled, but full details aren’t coming until Tuesday. For now, we’ve got a bit of info:

Frame has a claimed weight of 790g for size 54, and a frameset weight of just 1,340g including the fork, headset and their new seatpost. For a superlight frame, it makes some interesting spec choices, like PF86 bottom bracket and a full 1-1/8″ to 1-1/2″ tapered steerer, neither being the lightest option but certainly appreciated.

Urgestalt translates as “archetype”, which means a typical example of a genre, suggesting it’s the standard by which road bikes can now be judged…

Nice shaping and clean lines are kept beautiful with hidden ports for either mechanical or electronic drivetrains.

The PF86 bottom bracket pushes the frame all the way out to the cranks for a cleaner look and wider footprint for the chainstays and downtube. That, plus their blend of high modulus fibers, layup pattern and special resins (taken from their experience making carbon rims) creates a system designed to effectively transfer your power directly to the rear wheel.

But, that efficiency shouldn’t come at the expense of comfort these days, and Lightweight says the frame and geometry are  designed for the long distance sportive rider.

The Urgestalt seatpost is an all-new design built around a Monolink saddle. Looks like the post binder bolt is hidden under the top tube, just in front of the seat tube.

Fork weight with uncut steerer came in around 318g on their scales. It, and the frame, will fit up to 25c tires.

The frameset carries a max rider/parts weight limit of 120kg (264lbs), will retail around $6,500 to $6,750 USD and be available at the end of October. More as we get it!

I don’t usually comment on prices but $6500, wowzas! Is this the most expensive stock frame on the market?

much like their wheels “impressive weight for an over priced wheel with outdated rim shape”

Beautiful finishing, love the understated graphics and clean lines of the frame & forks.

Nice looking for sure. Price is insane. Sportive + 6.5k fram = entists only need apply.

Haha j/k, I love to buy and enjoy nice things too. I assume this is something along the lines of the Time Fluidity or Stevens ventoux. It will be interesting to see how these perform under hard tests.

This is indeed a very modern iteration of a long standing classic design. Love the tapered headtube and overall shape of it! Since it is literally an “archetype”, complaining about pricing seems irrelevant. They did this frame to prove that they can and with some luck other manufacturers will check it out and step their game up too. Win win.

They’re really doubling down on that ghastly Lightweight logo by using the Lucida Calligarphy font in the badge. Barf.

interested to hear it’s asian-made despite the price and all lightweight’s company background and experience in carbon manufacturing. says a lot about asia’s expertise?

Jimbo, where did you hear it’s Asian made?

I’ve been needing a fondo frame. I mean, I’ve already got a road bike, crit bike, tri bike, cyclocross bike, and gravel grinder. I had been in such a dilemma with not having a fondo bike.

My next predicament is being stuck with this all mountain bike of mine when I’m really more of an enduro rider.

Beautiful bike. I expected more from LW. This bike should a lot lighter. I think we’ll have to wait for Tune to show their frame design ideas.

Just beautiful. Love the attention to detail and commitment to make the design look so clean. Out of my price range but I’d get one in a hot minute if money was no object.

The frame does have refreshing lack of decals.

not sure, to me it looks utterly boring, there is no technical feature that looks attractive, not even made in germany, finish looks ugly (look at the fork picture) – what a joke…if you want a light bike get a Cannondale Evo Black edition, if you want an exciting bike get the RB1000…think the only ppl buying this don’t understand anything about bikes but just look for the right stamp

Holds up to 25c tires! On a sportive bike? That’s awesome 15 years ago! Seriously, this one digs a little deep. Their resin knowledge from working with wheels helps keep the drivetrain stiff… I mean, is there a resin arms race we don’t know about?

I googled”handarbeit fur beiarbein” it said it translates to “handmade for footwork”, but I’m guessing it should translate to Handmade by Germans?

Hannes – to prove that they can what… make a frame? I have seen zero technical data or performance reviews so nothing has been proven. And I think price is relevant in the context of the other items they sell. They still overcharge for wheels with an outdated design that delaminate and crack. ANd they have terrible suopport and refund policy.

I was being neutral in my foirst post but honestly I think this brand is a bit of a sham, rolling the dice on this marketing scheme – “if we charge uber high prices people will begin to believe the hype”.

Winncity – max lol comment about Lucida Calligraphy!

Finally, matte black. Parlee much? I’m so over the matte black thing.

the look is nice and simple, very Cervelo R5ish. i like the placement of the seatpost binder, but not the bolt’s positioning. it ought to come out at an angle so the head of a torque wrench can fit. front derailleur mount ought to be something nicer, stiffer, and more sturdy than that flimsy piece of aluminum riveted on.

Uhm, matt black is generally the color of carbon fiber, rico, and the motif of the bike matches that of their wheels. Such facts can easily be found in the interweb tubes. You are right, however, in that there is no data on the frame that verifies its performance. By that same token, however, there is no data supporting your suspicion or bias about the frame, only a lack of objectivity.

“Looks like the post binder bolt is hidden under the top tube, just in front of the seat tube.”

I bet that my torque wrench has trouble getting at that seatpost clamp. Will this be another version of the ridiculous FSA K-Force Light stem which also had “un-torquable” bolts? Reminds me that the even the best german engineering makes mistakes . . . now about those road wheels that get clogged with mud on that tiger tank I bought . . .

Hey, don’t call it a Fondo bike if it can only fit 25c tires.

PS – too expensive!

Agreed, that Lightweight logo needs to change, that was a Top Font back in the 80s when i was designing business cards for Bed & Breakfast hotels in the west of Ireland. I could never have that on a bike (and then there’s the cost too 🙂

if you just want to go on weight, there are probably several frames out there in this realm. Sarto Cima Coppi comes to mind – and it’s been around for a bit and actually ridden. The new Scott Addict will probably get close to this too for the frame / fork / headset combo.

Wow it is very interesting to see all the comments on here both positive and negative. I consider myself very lucky to have one of these bikes sitting in my stable already and I can only describe it as WOW.

To squash some of the unfounded comments above I want to briefly say the following

Lightweight set out to create the best frame they possibly can using their carbon know how and expertise from the best factories in the world. Yes to the shock and horror of some (including myself) the frame was not made in Germany! The frame factory who Lightweight see to be as the best at what they do was in Asia.

In my stable of bike is a MCipollini RB1000 and a BH Ultra Light and these are my two bench marks for speed and comfort respectively. The Urgestalt frame set is the characteristics of these two bikes morphed into one.

I believe this to be so much bike for the money and encourage any of the haters to try riding one before they go slagging what I believe in the new bench mark in frames.

Hi PSI Squared,

My Suspiscion about the frame comes from the many documented cases of shoddy rim quality and crappy support follow up that requires custmers to pay for repairs. See WW forum, the truth hole.

Re: matte (not matt) black, I understand using it (non paint) for lightness. Point taken, but I’m still uber bored with matte black. A white version would be 14 times hotter.
