Velocity Mid Fat 29+ Dually Rim

With the ever increasing popularity of fat bikes comes more choice.  Frames are now offered in steel, aluminum, titanium  and carbon.  Builders are exploring both front and rear suspension options.  And now, the wheelset options are growing thanks to Velocity’s new Dually mid fat rim for the 29+ crowed (read: Krampus).

This is the first double walled rim intended for this segment of the fat bike market (29+ and racing).  Even with the extra material the rim comes in at a light 675g.  Reinforced sidewalls are present to help prevent damage when running ultra-low pressures, and the rim is compatible with tubeless ready tires.

The initial offerings will come either a 26″ and 29″ diameter with a 32h drilling, in polished or black, and should arrive in early September.  Pre-orders have already started, and we can expect full wheelsets to be offered up from Velocity’s in house wheel building group, The Wheel Department.  Oh, and these hoops are made right here in the USA at their Jacksonville, FL location.

Not the first double wall rim for fatbikes. The original Large Marge comes to mind, and there may be others.

Methinks this will be excellent with a Schwalbe Super Moto of the 2.35″ variety.

good point nathon.

more general question; since road rims are getting wider and wider (to improve tyre rolling capabilities), why does this not happen more for mtb rims? these seem to be very narrow compared to the tyres.

Companies such as Velocity and Syntace (amongst others) are introducing more wider rims. Mavic and Shimano seem to be holding out though… And they make a lot of OEM wheels.

no, actually its not a great price Denny. its an aluminum rim rolled by velocity. Check the prices on any of their other rims and get back to me. Oooh, 16 whole dollars off the most expensive aluminum rims ever, wow thats so great.

I bet this took a new wider extrusion machine to accomplish, and thus the high price.
Tooling is a major factor in price and overhead.

@ChadQuest I was gonna say exactly the same thing. Undoubtedly would have required new tooling.

@g I’ll say to you what I say to everyone who complains about price. Either a) don’t buy ’em, or b) start your own manufacturing company.
