Never doubt the healing power of bikes. As we celebrate Memorial Day and remember those military personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice, 14 wounded combat veterans are getting back to normal life and riding mountain bikes in the process for the 3rd Annual Wounded Warrior 100k. The ride not only celebrates veterans who have been seriously injured in combat, but the organizations that help the soldiers and their families get back their lives. This year’s support organizations include Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge, Team 4MIL and the Navy Seal Foundation.

Photos, Rider Bios, and some very cool bike adaptations after the break. Happy Memorial Day.

Check out Matt DeWitt’s bike, what looks to be a heavily modified Diamondback Sortie 29. Having lost both his arms below the elbow, Matt’s bike features a paddle behind the seat that he can slide back into to use the brakes. The paddle is connected to a brake lever with two cables which both feed into a TRP Parabox mounted to the seat tube. Shifting is Di2, and looks to be controlled by a button mounted to the top tube that is pressed with his knees.
