Kinomap Trainer geolocated training video apps for iPhone and iPad

We first heard of Kinomaps last year at Eurobike with the launch of Wahoo Fitness’ Kickr Trainer.

Now, their Kinomaps Trainer iOS app is available for download through Apple’s App Store, offering GPS-tracked cycling videos complete with speed, power, heartrate and other data for you to follow along with.

With more than 10,000 videos to choose from (not all cycling, they also have running/hiking/rowing vids through the Kinomaps Fitness app), you can find legendary climbs like the Alp d’Huez or races like the Tour de Romandie and try to keep up. The video paces itself along with your efforts, accelerating, slowing or pausing playback as necessary. It tracks your efforts with 3rd party Bluetooth devices (like those from Wahoo, Stages, etc.) and/or ANT+ devices (speed/cadence sensors, power meters, HR, etc.) with an external dongle. It can even use the front facing camera on your iPhone to estimate speed and cadence!

The apps split the screen to show riding/racing footage on the top and overlay your progress on a map below. Meanwhile, it’s also capturing your training data like HR, speed, time, distance, power and more…and you can switch to view that info under the video, too.

Here’s a little promo:

Some of the key features include:

  • Upload your own videos to train for upcoming races
  • Ride/Race against three friends through GameCenter and chat in real time (or mute whoever you want)
  • Search for rides using Google Maps to find videos from anywhere in the world
  • Download the videos for offline use anytime
  • Mirror to your TV using Airplay or an HDMI-out adapter

The app is free to download, and you can preview and try the first five minutes of the videos for free. Full access and data tracking runs $11.99 (£7.99) per month or $64.99 (£49.99) for a year. Just want to train from your own videos? Upload them and you can use those for free.

Don’t have the equipment to record your own videos? If you’ve read this far, you probably do. They make their Kinomap Maker app available for free, letting you use your iPhone to record both video and GPS info. Just use something like the Optrix case and Barfly mount. And, if you’re headed somewhere truly epic, they may even loan you a GoPro or Contour camera to record the ride for them!

Kinomap is another reason the new KICKR trainer from Wahoo Fitness is head and shoulders above all other trainers. With the open API platform, there seems to be many more app developers making really cool apps for the KICKR. being able to Go-Pro or video my local race course and then have the KICKR trainer run me through the course during my indoor/winter training is a game-changer.
