PDW Wide Full Metal Fenders Front View

I recently spent some time with the bikes of Sage Cycles, and as we do sometimes, I spotted a prototype product from PDW. Their road bike Full Metal Fenders (review coming once the rain starts back up) are meant for the skinny tire crowd. They work best on a 23mm tire, but can handle up to a 26mm tire if desired. The new wide version is designed to clear a 35mm tire with ease, and assuming frame clearance is adequate, a 38mm tire. If that still isn’t wide enough, PDW always has the Mud Shovel.

The beauty of the Full Metal Fenders is that they are designed to work on bikes lacking fender eyelets. The wide version will come with a similar set of hardware, but will also include a longer suspension corrected tab. I am told they are working on a disc brake stay option as well. The first production run should be ready for purchase in August, and cost should come in at the $120 mark (same as the narrow version).

Video and images past the jump.

Sage Cycles Logan Relaxed Road

Here they are mounted up on the Sage Cycles Logan commuter build.  They are covering Schwalbe Marathon 32mm tires with room to spare.

PDW Wide Full Metal Fenders Rear

The grey anodized aluminium and laser etched graphics have a really classy look.

This installation video is for the current narrow Full Metal Fenders, but should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect from their wider brethren.

Those are nice looking. I prefer the anodized finish over the polished aluminum of other metal fenders. They need to lose the glued-on badge in the front – not classy.

I’ve seen the narrow ones in action, and I have to say, it’s probably the most clever design for a REAL fender I’ve encountered, especially if you don’t have braze-ons. These should probably be a must-have for anyone riding their fancy road bike from October through March.
