FrostBike 2013: Hutchinson Goes Big with 28mm Road Tubeless Proto, 27.5 Tubeless Ready Hardskin, and Galactik Atom

Seeing as how most of you were commenting on the Schwalbe Tubeless Road post that there needs to be bigger road tubeless tires, Hutchinson’s display at FrostBike should make you happy. While currently still a prototype, Hutchinson is actively pursuing the first 28mm road tubeless tire. Named the Secteur 28, the new tire should be available by Sea Otter – so not that much longer! We weren’t able to get any weights or additional info, but at least we know it’s coming.

In addition to the Secteur 28, Hutchinson is also offering a new super light Road Tubeless tire as well as a range of mountain tires that are Tubeless Ready Hardskin equipped. See it all after the jump.

The prototype Secteur 28 shows a slick center section with near file tread side profiles for increased grip when you’re leaning it over on loose surfaces. From the looks of it, this will be a true 28mm tire as it was visibly much larger than the other tires near by. Judging by the amount of riders clamoring for bigger treads we think this will be a hit – more at Sea Otter.

In other Road Tubeless news, Hutchinson is now offering a Galactik Atom model that comes in at a scant 240g for the 700x23c size. For non tubeless lightweight tires, Hutchinson is offering their new Atom Comp XLight which is a feathery 160g for the 23mm size – on our scale it was a respectably close 164g.

Now available in many of the mountain bike tread patterns, Hutchinson is offering a Hardskin version of their Tubeless Ready tires for new 27.5 wheels. Tread patterns and tire construction remains the same, just now they are offered for the additional wheelsize. Sun Ringle is killing it with the 27.5 display rims – just about every tire company displaying 27.5 tires are using their rims, probably because they’re one of the few available!

Fantastic, the Secteur 28 tires will be right at home on my Steelwool Secteur 18 ( http://talltreerides.blogspot.ca/2009/12/ride-quality-steelwool-secteur-18.html)!

Hoping the S28 is supple….

A sensible size at last!
28mm isn’t “big” anyway. It’s a sensible minimum for the typical UK roads.

I’ll take 28s in New England every day. Our roads are beat to hell – cracks, erosion, frost heaves, pot holes, portions as dirt or gravel…

Now we just need some 28mm tubeless tires with gumwalls. Classic look with modern technology. I keep asking but no one is listening.

So what happened to Hutchinson’s 28mm Intensive tubeless that covered by the bike media in June, 2012? It’s good to see Hutchinson leading the way, but are these tires going to be more of the same vaporware?

Heres hoping they stick to their Mid-April release date for the 28mm’s!

I see your 2012 and raise you 2009!

Can anyone confirm what is on the inside of the road tubeless tires? Latex on the Galactik and plain carcass on the 28mm? Please no crappy thick inner tubes that negate the point of the technology like Schwalbe have done.

This may be the same tire that was initially referred to as the 28mm intensive. It might have not been branded back then and assumed it would be labeled the intensive. It does have a different tread pattern so who knows. Not that tread patterns matter on road tires anyways.

I purchased these tires and I have also tried to contact Hutchinson by email with no response. I was able to get the tires mounted with ease per their instructions. I wanted to make sure that I could remove the tires from the rim in case of a large puncture and I could not break the bead. I took the tires into my bike shop and they were finally able to break the bead. Next I re-seated the tires and I put in the Hutchinson sealant and inflated the tires. The first wheel is fine the second one leaks on one side of the rim. It wont hold air over night. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks
