Every winter, Clif Bar release a handful of limited-time seasonal flavors of their namesake energy bar.  Every winter, riders in my little group rave about one or another, but I’m usually a bit late on the draw or have too many snacks in the drawer to justify buying more.  This year, though, Clif (the company, not the founder’s father) sent us a care package with each of the season’s flavors:  Spiced Pumpkin Pie, Iced Gingerbread, and Cranberry Orange Nut Bread.  Though all three are, in true Clif Bar fashion, excellent and far more nutritious than their flavor would suggest, for me, one really stands out .

A small guy who likes to fuel gradually, it’s actually rare that I’ll eat a whole 240 calorie Clif Bar during one ride.  Usually, I’ll eat a half bar a couple of hours in and finish it on my next ride.  Of the three I had, none of the Cranberry Orange Nut Bread bars made it through a single ride.  The soft bar initially tastes strongly and startlingly of orange, with cranberry and walnut flavors following.  Like a good meal, the seasonal Clif Bar’s flavors actually bear examination and come in stages- something I’ve never experienced in an energy bar.  Ohmygosh.

Similar to other Clif Bar products, the Cranberry Orange Nut Bread bar is made of 70% organic ingredients and contains 9g of protein, 50 fat calories, and plenty of complex carbohydrates to keep them burning over the long haul.  They’re no longer being made but still available online and in stores.  If you like cranberry sauce or wholesome homemade bread, these are your bars.
