NAHBS 2010 – Copenhagen’s Cykelmageren brought Danish design to Richmond.  The clever design cues on their bikes were almost overshadowed by the clever accessories they make (like those acrylic handlebars and hubs, which I’ll cover in a separate post), but the frames easily stand on their own.

Shown above is the “thin” fixed gear steel bike.  This and their other bikes are made in stock sizes, but customized with details and trick features per the customers’ requests.  They retail for $3,000.  Check all the pics and the three-speed retro-cool cruiser after the break…

The classic gloss black paint belies the details on the bike.

It gets the “thin” name from the tweaked top tube…

…that’s pencil thin.  Kate Moss would be proud.

Stepped chrome headset and lugged frame add elegance.

The flat metal logo plate doubles as a seatstay bridge, and it’s mirrored on the pedals.  A small stepdown in the stay tubes add a bit of visual interest but serve no other purpose.

Hubs are made to be built up with various inserts (covered separately) to match or contrast their handlebars.

J-bend spokes come out the sides of the hub flange for a pretty slick look.

Cykelmageren makes the handlebars, too.

For those of us who like a few gears, they have this classic gent’s style cruiser with a three speed indented shift lever.

Another example of their interchangeable grips.

This bike had a built in wheel lock to keep would-be thieves from riding off on your bike.  Shown above open…

…you simply flip the rod on the non-drive side up and push it into the lock.  Turn the key and remove and it remains stuck between your spokes, preventing rear wheel movement.

The gear lever is pushed outward then slid fore or aft to change gears.

The cable runs down the top tube…

…through a pulley and into the seatstay…

…and pops out to the pull chain to change the internally geared hub.
