The Firefly is an extended blinky light that senses traffic coming up behind you and lights you up so drivers are much more likely to see you.

The light unit houses an infrared sensor to detect vehicles as they approach.  It then illuminates white LED lights that shine on your back and the road, using all that space to create a life size glow.  The closer the cars get, the brighter the lights shine, making you pretty hard to miss.

Firefly designer James Morton has submitted the design to the Australian Design Awards to compete for the James Dyson Award 2010.

“This makes it the only bicycle light that gives the rider human characteristics so they aren’t treated as just another cyclist,” Morton says. “As well as this unique back light, the Firefly also incorporates ground illumination to provide a perception of depth for approaching traffic, as well as a tail light feature, all in the one unit.

“By mounting the unit to the seat post the device can be used with all bicycle types and is compatible with existing bicycle accessories such as mudguards, panniers and backpacks. With such responsive back illumination there is no need for additional safety apparel such as safety vests. A built-in power port allows for powering (of) additional lighting or accessories.”

The die-case aluminum body houses all electronics and provides a durable cover for the rechargeable battery.  It mounts to the seat post with a quickrelease, and the power button cycles through seven different lighting patterns.
