UCI Announces NO Positive Dope Tests at 2009 Tour de France

UCI president Pat McQuaid said Sunday there were no positive dope tests at the 2009 Tour de France.

He told Reuters: “At this point in time I haven’t heard of any positive tests at this year’s Tour de France or that we’re checking samples to confirm positives.

“It’s looking like the Tour de France will not have any positive tests for a number of years. I think that’s a big step forward for cycling.”

The UCI introduced the Blood Passport last year, and the effort appears to be paying off with a cleaner sport.

RELATED: Unfortunately, Danilo Di Luca’s Giro di Italia CERA test was confirmed positive with the results of his B sample.  CERA, a banned blood booster, was found in his A and B blood samples, the Italian Cycling Federation said Saturday.  Di Luca won the Giro in 2007 and was runner-up this year. Mikel Astarloza of Euskaltel failed a doping test for EPO taken 25 days before the tour started… So I guess that technically doesn’t get lumped into the Tour’s doping statistics.

There’s no better way to generate some positive results than announcing that you had no positive results.
