bicycle friendly state ranking program from league of american bicyclists

…and Alabama brings up the rear in the League of American Bicyclists‘ annual ranking.

The Bicycle Friendly State program is a ranking and award designation program the recognizes states that actively support bicycling.  Modeled after the successful Bicycle Friendly Community program, Bicycle Friendly State is part of the League of American Bicyclists’ mission to create a Bicycle Friendly America. A Bicycle Friendly State provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation.

The program is supported by Bikes Belong and Trek Bicycles.

I do not trust this list because it is based on “accommodation for cycling” instead of actual riding conditions. For example, US Government statistics show that Florida has by far the highest per-capita bicyclist fatality rate. Why aren’t they lower on this list?
