NewsJacksonville.com reports that, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures, Florida had 113 cyclists die on its roads in 2008.  That’s down from 121 the year before, but still higher than California’s 109 and Georgia’s 16.

The story interviews several bike shop owners, club members and cycling advocacy representatives, who largely blame the problem on a) lack of infrastructure to support cycling, b) lack of driver and cyclist education and c) the year round cycling climate, which increases opportunities versus colder states.

Don’t blame the climate. California mostly has a great climate for year-round bicycling, but California has double the population and half the per-capita bicyclist fatality rate of Florida.
