Velib Bicycle Sharing Program Seeing Vandalism

Thanks to shenanigans like in the video above, NYC may end up rethinking (or at least delaying) its decision to implement a bicycle sharing program similar to Paris’ Velib, which has been suffering from missing bikes, vandalism and higher than anticipated costs in running the program.

In 2007, Forum for Urban Design, a New York City group of architects, designers and planners conducted a small-scale bike sharing program in NYC to help city planners and DOT see if it could work there.

The BBC reported that more than half of the Velib bikes have gone missing, presumably stolen, and quotes the company running the program, JCDecaux, as saying it can’t afford to repair and replace the $500 apiece bicycles under the current operating procedure.
